UNODC Regional Expert/Addictionologist Mr. Josef Radimecky undertook study visit to Sunny Trust on October 21, 2014 as part of the UNODC Regional Program rapid assessment on drug use, dependence as well as drug prevention, treatment and care Interventions (including HIV/AIDS) in eight Regional Program countries (Afghanistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan). The main objective of this assessment was to provide a snapshot of information, needs and resources with regard to drug dependence treatment and care services to support planning, development and implementation of cost effective interventions in the mentioned countries. Mr. Radimecky was a Czech addictionologist practicing and teaching in Prague University and presently serving as UNODC regional consultant/expert for this rapid assessment. His trip to Pakistan was coordinated by UNODC Pakistan, who selected Sunny Trust International as one of the addiction treatment & rehabilitation facilities in Pakistan for this regional assessment. Mr. Josef Radimecky was accompanied by Dr. Farrukh Mahmood Ansari, Program Officer Drug Demand Reduction & HIV/AIDS Prevention, UNODC Pakistan to the Sunny Trust. Mr. Josef Radimecky met with Chairman Sunny Trust Dr. Munawar Fayyaz Sunny, ST Program Advisor (Honorary) Prof. Raja Ehsan Aziz, ST Head Psychology Deptt & Rehabilitation, Assistant Manager Mr. Tahir and IT/Data Support Officer Mr. Farooq. Dr. Sunny provided an introductory overview of the drug situation in Pakistan and Sunny Trust experience, followed by detailed briefing on Sunny Trust services led by head psychology department and then questions & answers session covering treatment & rehabilitation related issues. Mr. Radimecky also took note of Sunny Trust periodic reporting and database maintenance on patients & families. Following this interactive discussion Mr. Radimecky took a round of the Sunny Trust hospital and keenly observed the patients (moderated by the staff) engaged in a spirited group therapy discussion and other services at work. He was deeply impressed and pleased with this rare experience of such intensive, interactive, patricipatory and well-structured system of treatment & rehabilitation of drug addicts.
